Survival rifles exist on the fringe of firearms. They’re a cool idea — a gun that disassembles or breaks down or folds to be ultra-stowable and lightweight. The idea is you pack it away in some kind of large survival kit or pack so that it will be ready to deploy for subsistence hunting in an extended survival situation. But what if you could have that kind of capability in an actual hunting rifle instead of settling for a rimfire or a pistol-caliber carbine? Enter the new SIG Cross Trax folding rifle.
This latest entry in the SIG Cross line of rifles is dubbed by the gunmaker as the “perfect compact hunting rifle.”
If you regularly keep a rifle in your truck for impromptu sits during deer season, this could be your space-saving savior. Or, if you want to put together a go-bag that can actually hunt instead of settling for a little more than a collapsible squirrel gun, the SIG Cross Trax fits the bill.
SIG debuted the Cross rifle platform in late 2019 just before SHOT Show, and a heavier, bulkier version (14 pounds) was released last year, and now, we have a new variant on the other end of the spectrum.
The Cross Trax features a side-folding Leg Bone minimalist stock and a 16-inch tapered barrel wrapped in an 11.5-inch lightweight handguard for a .308 Winchester rifle that weighs in at just 6.1 pounds with an MSRP of $1,399.99.
This svelte bolt gun also features a SIG Rattler grip from the company’s MCX, and a low-profile “no-snag” bolt handle with a two-stage adjustable match trigger. The gun feeds from a five-round AICS detachable box magazine and the muzzle is threaded and ready to accept a suppressor while an optics rail will accept any scope rings you want.
The folded rifle is only 26 inches long; when unfolded, the overall length is 35 inches.
Will a lightweight 6mm or 6.5mm Creedmoor version be on the way soon? Probably, but the .308 is still a tremendous medium-range deer gun with this length of barrel.
