It’s been a busy month for Smith & Wesson. The venerable American gunmaker recently released three new entries in its M&P Carry Comp handgun line that had fans drooling, all the while teasing a big release for July 16 — only to have it leaked a day or so early. That big news turned out to be a long-awaited update to the popular Bodyguard 380 micro-compact CCW pistol — the new Bodyguard 2.0.
Believe it or not, the OG Bodyguard dropped 14 years ago at the 2010 SHOT Show. In that time a number of from-the-factory options have been made available, like lasers, manual safeties, and engraved slides. This new generation of Bodyguard handguns is meant to be a serious performance upgrade for the small and lightweight self-defense handgun platform.
What’s New With the Bodyguard 2.0
Let’s get right to it — what kind of overhaul does the Bodyguard 2.0 represent? First off, it has a new profile that S&W says allows for better control over the small handgun. It also has a greater ammo capacity than the original.
It’s still chambered in .380 Auto, a pistol cartridge that has garnered more respect over the past few years, largely due to modern pistols like the Bodyguard, but the flush-fit mag holds 10 rounds and an extended mag offers a 12-round capacity.
That doesn’t sound like much these days in the era of 20-round 9mm magazines, but it’s impressive for a pistol that’s 4 inches tall, less than an inch wide, and weighs just 9.8 ounces (unloaded).
The striker-fired handgun boasts a new flat-faced trigger, a black U-notch rear sight paired with a tritium front sight.
“The Bodyguard 2.0 is a breakthrough new micro-sized striker-fired pistol from Smith & Wesson,” said Andrew Gore, Smith & Wesson’s Handgun Product Manager. “Although small in size, the Bodyguard 2.0 has an impressive capacity, crisp trigger-pull, and exceptional controllability. The combination of new aggressive, but not sharp, slide serrations, and strategic texturing over the frame aid in the pistol’s superior performance leading it to the front of the micro category.”
