Smith & Wesson has released a new entry in its Spec Series of limited edition handguns, and it’s the first to come out of the company’s revered Performance Center line. The gunmaker says this new version of the gunmaker’s M&P Spec Series places more emphasis on performance than ever before and includes enhanced features like an all-metal frame — on a gun that was first introduced as a polymer-framed striker gun.
It also includes a Faxon compensator on its threaded barrel, an ultra in-vogue accessory for 9mm pistols these days. The new Performance Center M&P9 Metal M2.0 Spec Series also features the C.O.R.E. optic-mounting system, a slide with lightening cuts, and a new sear design.
This handgun comes as part of a kit in a hard case that includes four magazines (two 23-round mags and two 17-round mags), a collectible M&P Spec Series challenge coin, and a karambit-style knife. The whole package has an extremely reasonable MSRP of $999.
The C.O.R.E. system that S&W uses allows the pistol to accommodate a majority of popular handgun red dots, and the pistol will work with all holsters made for 5-inch M&P pistols.
The Faxon compensator mitigates felt recoil and muzzle rise, and the lightened slide improves the pistol’s reliability if you choose to mount a can on that threaded muzzle instead of the comp — and suppressor-height iron sights are also included. That new sear mentioned above is intended to have a lighter, crisp let-off.
When it comes to looks, this new gun definitely stands out with the cool angled compensator that echoes the lines of the TTI Combat Master Glocks, and the OD Green Cerakote on the metal frame gives the gun a muted two-toned color scheme that just looks fantastic.
“Our M&P polymer handguns have long been recognized for their reliability and ergonomic design,” said S&W’s product manager, Corey Beaudreau. “By combining these trusted attributes with the durability of the Metal M2.0 platform and adding modern performance upgrades, we were able to elevate the Spec Series to the next level. This design is a bridge between tradition and progress and offers a distinct edge across today’s dynamic shooting environments.”
At that price, with these features and the included extras — especially the four mags — and this higher-end, metal-framed M&P’s looks and versatility, this is an unquestionably awesome deal. The M&P series gets overlooked a lot in favor of Glocks, SIGs, and other brands.
But a hell of a lot of people have bought M&Ps, and if you’ve shot anything but the base stock versions, you’ll know that pretty much every gun in the M&P 2.0 line is a shooter. The platform has nothing left to prove. And this new limited edition kit is, in short, badass.
